Jessica Stanley is comfortable in her orderly life as a paralegal at a high end law firm. Having dated her fair share of liars and manipulators, Jessica views men through a pair of thick, cynical lenses. Men are good for one thing in her eyes, and one thing only.

Her predictable life is thrown into a whirlwind of new experiences when she meets a dominating man at a casual dinner with friends.

Royce Bradford is a man of intent and is used to getting his way. Until he meets Jessica. She is wound tight, and he finds himself yearning to unravel her secrets and her passions.

Jessica declares their relationship casual. She’s tempted by his seductive tone and unusually powerful demeanor to give him that much. But for Royce, it’s not enough. He wants more.

Except Jessica has built a secret tomb around her heart, and it will take a lot more than sensual play times and verbal commands for him to be allowed entrance. Royce never backs down from his desires. He takes up the challenge to seek out her Hidden Heart. (Goodreads)

Opening Lines
"True love was a myth spread among generations of single women to encourage them to continue their search for the man of their dreams. Jessica Stanley knew better. She’d called off the hopeless scavenger hunt a year after turning twenty-five."

Hidden Heart was an interesting and quick read. I liked Jessica's character, she's a strong and independent woman that keeps men at a distance. Although we get little snippets into her past, I would have preferred if there was at least a chapter decimated to her past. I felt like the info we got left some unanswered questions. While I really liked Jessica's character I couldn't fully connect with her, I wanted to know more about her and I think that's what hindered the connection. I wanted to know about her family, I wanted to know what happened (in detail) with her ex-boyfriends while at UIC, I just wanted more!

Although I felt like there wasn't much we knew about Royce I really liked his relationship with Jessica. I think there a perfect match because Jessica doesn't give into Royce easily, but Royce wants more than just sex and he manages to break down Jessica's walls after a little misunderstanding. Certain elements of this book, and the misunderstanding reminded me too much of 50 Shades of Grey, but once I was able to get passed that I was able to enjoy it.

I was expecting there relationship to grow over the course of this series, but it seems the next book focuses on a character in Hidden Heart, Kelly. I hope we still get to see snippets of Jessica & Royce though! And I'm really looking forward to Alex's story, I feel like he's a great character and I definitely want to see more of him!

Overall, Hidden Heart was an enjoyable read! I read it in one sitting, cover to cover because I was so curious to see how things would play out between Royce and Jessica. Definitely intrigued to read about Kelly in the next book. Take a peek and read the excerpt included below!

Excerpt

They walked in silence for the first block. Neither seemed to know what to say or how to begin a conversation. Jessica felt his eyes on her, but continued to look straight ahead of her. It had been a while since she spent this much time alone with a man.
Royce broke the silence by inquiring about her work. He gave her his full attention, asking questions when he didn’t understand something she said. He didn’t just nod and daydream like most of the men she’d dated.
She began to relax by the time they made their way onto her block. She focused on him as he told her about his new position. He hadn’t been looking for an executive job when he’d applied with Alex’s company, and he seemed cautiously optimistic about the new position.
She paused outside the steps to her apartment building to listen to him finish and noticed a couple coming down the stairs of the next building. The woman, a beautiful brunette, walked with a little limp as though she felt tender with her movements. The man walked behind her as a cab pulled to the curb, and he opened the door for her.
Then he slid his hand under her hair and cupped the back of her head, pulling her to his lips. They exchanged a passionate kiss, which he broke off, causing her to look disappointed. He laid a hand on a pendant she wore around her neck and said something to her that Jessica couldn’t make out. The woman’s smile spoke of pure happiness—raw joy—as though he had just said the most romantic thing in the world to her.
Jessica heard the woman say, “Yes, Sir. Thank you,” before she sunk into the cab. The man paid the driver and waved to her as she pulled away.
“Jessica…Jessica…” Royce’s voice pulled her back to him.
“I’m…wow. I’m sorry. I was…” She watched the man skip up his steps and go back into his building.
“You were eavesdropping on that couple.” Royce’s eyes glistened with laughter, his lips curving up at the ends.
“Yes.” She laughed. “It’s just…they seemed so entwined with each other.”
“Some couples are actually happy together.” He pointed out, leaning against the railing of the stairs.
“She didn’t call him by name. She called him Sir. Isn’t that an odd thing to call your lover?” she asked, using her forefinger to push a lock of hair behind her ear.
Royce’s expression changed. The laughter in his eyes dropped and was replaced with a mysterious look of seriousness, as though her words struck a nerve.
“No, it’s not odd at all. To some, it’s just as endearing as calling him honey or sweetheart—perhaps more intimate than those words.” His voice was smooth, firm. She wasn’t sure if she had offended him, or he was trying to teach her something.

Publisher: CW Books

Pages: 104

Rating:
A passionate journey through private emotional moments, Diana Raab's Lust voices the pain of loneliness and the heart's yearning for love while transcending the depths of human desire.

In her fourth book of poetry, Raab employs narrative verse that is alive, titillating, and seductive. Lust examines the emotional and physical complexity of love, helping readers navigate the risks of intimacy as we move toward the realization that every experience enriches our lives, whether we perceive it as joy, pain, or out of the ordinary. Yet for all their psychological richness, the poems' simplicity and accessibility will resonate with women and men across all walks of life. Lust is a book you won't put down and won't soon forget. (Goodreads)

** A version of this review was originally posted on my old blog ImaginativeMinds**

The Good

Lust
"If you know lust like I know lust
you know how it grabs you
in places that feel so good,
in a way that trumps tomorrow.

It snatches and strangles our pasts away
and forges forbidden futures,
while injecting needles of pure pleasure
into any artery receptive to its dose."

I decided to give you a little teaser of one of the poems I really enjoyed...and yes it also just happens to be the one with the same title of the book :). From Shel Silverstein, William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson to William Blake, I have always loved poetry.

The Book / Cover - Presentation is everything, right? When I received Lust in the mail I wasn't expecting it to be so beautiful! The picture above does not do this book justice of how beautiful that cover really is. This book this thin and really light, but what I love the most is how soft it is. This might sound weird, but there is just something about it's softness and the way it sits in my hands that just added to the whole experience of reading Lust.

So far I've read Lust twice. The first time I read Lust I was on the subway heading home and I know for a fact that the other passengers were able to pick up on what I was reading due to my facial expression and the cover. Let's just say I don't have a good poker face. I wasn't uncomfortable with reading this in public but it's just something I probably would have wanted to read at home for my first read. The second time I read Lust I was curled up in bed with my mug of tea and had a thunderstorm for background music. And this was a perfect way to read Lust in my opinion!

Lust covers the highs and lows of intimacy. I found myself to be completely lost within the words I was reading, at times I felt like I was in the book. I really believe that Lust just has a way of pulling different emotions out of it’s readers, wither it be passion, sex, or the hunger and thirst for someone.

I don't think I can say that I have one poem that is my favourite (this may change), every poem touched me in a different way but some of the ones I constantly read over and over again are What Women Want, Muse Me, Found, My Morphine and Protection. These were the poems that I found myself connecting with the most, I'm not sure why exactly but these poems were the ones that just grabbed me. This doesn't mean I didn't connect with the other poems because I most certainly did, there isn't a single poem that I didn't like.

I have to say though I was a little surprised with some of the reviews I read in which people have said they couldn't really relate/connect with Lust because of the topics and because they weren't in a relationship. It doesn't matter if your in a relationship, married, single or what, we all feel love, we all want love. It's just this standard emotion that we all want to feel and I really believe that Lust just has a way of pulling different emotions out of it's readers, wither it be passion, sex, or the hunger and thirst for someone.

Overall, Lust was a wonderful selection of poems. I'm so happy that TLC Book Tours allowed me to take part in this blog tour!

Top Ten Tuesday (2): Top Ten Books That Were Hard For Me To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we list our top 10 book-related things.

This weeks Top Ten Tuesday consists of ten books that were hard for me to read.

For this one I decided not to stick to a general theme, all the books below of different reason as to why they were so hard for me to read. Some are books I actually managed to finish, while others are books I haven't finished yet and either plan to or don't plan to pick back up. But somehow I ended up having 5 books that were classics, how!? So, let's begin!!

Top 5 Classics

Lord of the Flies Animal Farm The Great Gatsby Siddhartha Great Expectations

1) Lord of the Flies by William Golding (★★★) - This book...oh boy where do I even begin. Well, let me start by saying I love classics, even when I was younger I enjoyed reading them. I had to read this back in high school and I just hated it! I found the pace was too slow, heavily descriptive, I despised the characters and was just grossed out to the max when it comes to a certain event involving Piggy.

2) Animal Farm by George Orwell (★★)- Now this is a book that I was expecting to love but didn't. I read 1984 and LOVED IT! Read Animal Farm about 2 months after and just couldn't get into it...at all. I recently bought it and hoping to re-read it soon. Maybe my thoughts on it will change...

3) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (★★★★) - When I first read this book I gave it 2 stars, I ended up just re-reading it over the course of a couple of years and now I can finally (some what) appreciate it.

4) Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse (★★★) - I'm just going to say that this one is my own fault. I had to write a comparative essay between Siddhartha and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and I read The Alchemist first and loved it! When I started Siddhartha I just couldn't get into the story or follow what was happening. I found the characters to be very bland and the moral of the book didn't really effect me the way The Alchemist does.

5) Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (★★★★) - Oh Dickens. I'm not sure if there really is anything I can say that anyone hasn't heard. I struggled the first 3 times I read this, I constantly wanted to bang my head against the wall it was just so slow and too descriptive! But I took a university English Lit class and was actually able to really dissect and understand certain themes throughout Great Expectations.

Top 5 Books on my 'Try-Again' Shelf

The Host (The Host, #1) I've Got Your Number The 5th Wave (The Fifth Wave, #1) Since You've Been Gone Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)

6) The Host by Stephenie Meyer - I have actually lost count of how many times I have started this book, I've tried that many times. I read Twilight when it wasn't popular and nobody knew what it was (yes that phase did exist) so after the series blew up I was already hesitant but everyone kept saying that once you get passed the first couple of chapters it picks up...LIES!!

7) I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella - FOOTNOTES. This book has damn footnotes all throughout and I found it to be so distracting that I kept putting it down. I have yet to pick it back up and finish it.

8) The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey - I'm not sure if there are enough words to describe how upset I am with this stupid book!! Okay, it's not stupid. Why do I loathe this book at the moment? Because it put me in my first reading slump EVER! Last December I picked it up and got 183 pages in and just couldn't get passed 190.

9) Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson - I blame this entirely on the edition I received. I bought the e-book version and there were grammatical errors and it drove me up the wall. I thought it was just me but another girl made the same comment when we were reading this for Bookish Beauties Book Club. It sucks that I'll be paying for this twice, but at some point I'm just going to buy a physical copy and give it a try.

10) Cinder by Marissa Meyer - Oh Cinder, I want to love!! I started this as a buddy read with 2 other girls and was just so confused within the first 6 chapters that I just had to put it down. I'm not giving up, I WILL try to read it again before this year is over.

Are anyone of these are your list? Have you read any of these? Please leave comments & links to your Top Ten Tuesday posts below!

If you find yourself talking to Jayne Dandy, keep the conversation on Star Wars and rubber ducks—best not to mention men, dating, or S-E-X. Because Jayne is fine with the way things are: writer of obituaries and garage sale ads by day, secret scribe of adventures in distant galaxies by night. But her crippling fear of intimacy has made her the butt of jokes since forever, and hiding behind her laptop isn’t going to get her lightsaber lit.

After her therapist recommends that she write erotica as a form of exposure therapy, Jayne joins forces with pen and paper to combat the demons that won’t let her kiss and tell. Unexpectedly downsized at work, she adopts a pseudonym and secretly self-publishes one of her naughty books to make ends meet. When her adorable, long-time friend Luke, co-owner of the popular Portland food truck Luke Piewalker’s, hears she’s been demoted, he insists on hiring her to sling éclairs and turnovers at his side. Her secret must be kept, but sparks ignite between them, sending Jayne and her X-Wing into a tailspin that will either make her face down her neuroses or trigger a meltdown of Death Star proportions. (Goodreads)

Opening Lines
“Sex smells funny.”
Dr. McCoy chokes on her coffee. “I’d say ‘come again,’ but I’m afraid to.” She dabs at sputtered drops before they soak into her blouse. “How would you know, Jayne?”
“I’m not a complete newb. And my roommate—I know when she’s had a carnal sleepover. She lights scented candles. To mask the smell.”

Excerpt From: Eliza Gordon. “Neurotica.” iBooks.

I first heard of Eliza Gordon when I came across Must Love Otters on Goodreads. I badly wanted to read the book but it's not available in paperback at my local bookstore. I've read nothing but great reviews and mentions on how it's a fun read, so when I came across Neurotica I knew I was in for a treat!

Neurotica opens up with a hilarious scene that I just wasn't expecting! I knew at the moment that this would be getting a high rating as long as the story kept up from beginning to end and it did! This was a great read from start to finish and I can't really think of nothing that I hated.

I will admit the I was very hesitant about Jayne's character at first. There was just something about her that didn't make me instantly love her but I did start too when I was just shy of being half way through the book. Now Gretchen, well she drove me up the wall at first but I realized she was a true friend who was just trying to push Jaybe out of her comfort zone. What I loved the most was that this story wasn't ruined by a lot of sex, it kept true to provided readers a well layouted plot with a certain character that you can't help but swoon over!

Overall, Neurotica was an amazing read and one I can see myself re-reading sometime soon! I highly recommend picking this up :)

You’re not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a jerk he’d be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn’t want to be here.
I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.
But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. Then, things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Just as quickly as he’d come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I’d seen Elec.

When tragedy struck our family, I’d have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

Review: Crossing the Line

Crossing the Line

Rating: ★.5
It's Christmas in Paris. Chief of Police Nico Sirsky returns to work after recovering from a gunshot wound. He's in love and raring to go. His first day back has him overseeing a jewel heist sting and taking on an odd investigation. Dental students discovered a message in the tooth of a severed head. Is it a sick joke? Sirsky and his team of crack homicide detectives follow the clues from an apparent suicide to an apparent accident to an all-out murder as an intricate machination starts breaking down. Just how far can despair push a man? How clear is the line between good and evil? More suspense and mystery with the Paris Homicide team from the prizewinning author Frédérique Molay, the "French Michael Connelly". This is the second in the prize-winning Paris Homicide series. (Goodreads)

Paris Homicide series!

The 7th Woman Crossing the Line (Paris Homicide, #2) The City of Blood (Paris Homicide, #3)

Opening Lines

"Nico Sirsky breathed deeply, concentrating on his stride. His arms were bent at ninety degrees, and his eyes were focused straight ahead. The harsh cold bit his cheeks, but he kept a good pace, pain notwithstanding. He had been shot int he leg a few months earlier, and he was still recovering from the injury. The endorphins raced through his body. The effort felt good."

I just have to say that I really like the cover for Crossing the Line. I love the use of space, colour, and the contrast that really highlights the photo and helps it "pop". It's simple yet definitely stands out. When I first received Crossing the Line I was a little worried about the fact that it was the 2nd book in a series. I wasn't sure what to expect, where the story would start off, or if I would be able to follow without feeling like I was missing key information. None of this was the case, even though it's the 2nd book this can easily be read as a standalone and you won't feel lost and confused.
"I was murdered."

I laughed, so hard. It's not funny but I think it was just the irony of the situation that really got to me. The plot was well thought out and executed perfectly, I didn't come across sections that felt like fluff. What made this the ideal mystery and suspense novel was the fact that I felt like I was constantly kept on my toes. I tried guessing how it would all end and I was most certainly wrong!

I've never been to Paris, so what I really enjoyed was Frédérique Molay's ability to bring the story to life! I felt like I was in Paris it was like having my own personal tour guide with a side of crime. There was only one thing I really struggled with while reading Crossing the Line, and that was being able to connect with the characters. For me I found they lacked depth and were just one dimensional. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I feel there was room for improvement on the characters growth throughout the story.

Lasting Impression

Overall, Crossing the Line was an enjoyable read that kept me on my toes! I look forward to picking up the first book in this series and The City of Blood which comes out January 18th, 2015! If you want to read a great mystery book that isn't extremely predictable than I suggest picking this up!

In the town of Belle Ridge there are doctors, lawyers and teachers... but there is only one vampire. Will Leighton has become an expert in making a life for himself amongst the unsuspecting small-town inhabitants, as the high school history teacher. He has spent hundreds of years crafting an identity and routine that make him feel almost human, but he is always missing that important final element, love.

Ashton Wallace is beautiful, smart, and angry. She was forced into an eternal existence, and now her family has moved her away from everything and everyone she knows. In Belle Ridge she is supposed to finish high school and start her life again, but how do you make plans for the next several centuries?

Will has never met another of his kind, and is immediately intrigued by Ashton. He longs to show her that the perceived vampire lifestyle, so popular in storybooks, is far from reality...but will she let him be a friend and guide in this new existence? Can Ashton accept Will into her life, or will she be led astray by a dark stranger with whom she shares an unknown connection? (Goodreads)

Opening Lines
“In the town of Belle Ridge, there were doctors, lawyers, and teachers. But there was only one vampire, and he happened to be the high school history teacher.”
Excerpt From: Emily Shaffer. “Unrequited.” iBooks.

So what made me want to read Unrequited? The cover. Seriously, it's so simple yet so bold. My eyes were instantly drawn to the lips and the heart on it. I also love the contrast on the white/pale skin background with black font and red accents. It just makes the cover stand out more than it usually would if other colours were chosen.

If your use to the world of vampires were they can't come out during the day, drink blood, can't digest food, can't step into a church and all those classic vampire things than Unrequited will definitely be a unique read for you! Emily Shaffer has completely re-vamped (see what I did there?!) what we know about vampires, in Unrequited they can go into churches, be out during the day, and eat food, although it's more of an act to blend in.

Love Triangle - I really don't like reading books that involve love triangles because it always leads to someones heart being broken, but yet I seem to continue reading books that have them! I was instantly Team Will from the moment we first meet him, he's just such a swoon worthy character! And Griffin, well I disliked Griffin from the moment we met him and only started to like him a little bit within the last four chapters. I'm hoping that in the next book Ashton will come to her sense and pick Will! And if Emily Shaffer can throw in a love interest for Griffin then everyone will have a happy ending.

“Without a single word, he knew Ashton hadn't come back to Belle Ridge for him. Her eyes, her beautiful green eyes, didn’t hold the same look for him they once had. He couldn’t move. He could scarcely breathe. In less than an instant he felt like everything he had planned and wanted had evaporated into the air. All that remained was his bruised and broken heart and the memory of a stolen moment in time.”
Excerpt From: Emily Shaffer. “Unrequited.” iBooks.

Emily Shaffer is a very descriptive writer. I felt every emotion that Will, Ashton and even Griffin felt. At times though I felt like the story was rushed and I would have preferred for there to be more of a development with Ashton's feelings towards both Will and Griffin. I liked having the story told from both Will and Ashton's point-of-view, this was the perfect way to really capture each characters emotions and thoughts, however I would have liked to have seen more from Griffin's perspective.

Lasting Impression

Overall, Unrequited was a unique and fast paced read. We're left with a serious cliffhanger and I'm definitely intrigued to read the sequel to find out what will happen next! TEAM WILL!!!

The clock chimes midnight, a curse breaks, and a girl meets a prince . . . but what follows is not all sweetness and sugarplums.

New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor's ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother's murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.

Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.

Her home is destroyed, her father abducted--by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. If they're to survive, Clara has no choice but to trust him, but his haunted eyes burn with secrets--and a need she can't define. With the dangerous, seductive faery queen Anise hunting them, Clara soon realizes she won't leave Cane unscathed--if she leaves at all.

Inspired by The Nutcracker, Winterspell is a dark, timeless fairy tale about love and war, longing and loneliness, and a girl who must learn to live without fear. (Goodreads)

Why I'm Waiting...

Simple, I'm in love with Claire Legrand's books. Okay, so I've only read The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls but still it was freaking fantastic! After falling in love with Cavendish, Claire Legrand quickly became one of my favourite authors. If your interested, be sure to check out the prequel Summerfall: A Winterspell Novella!
